While reading, I got the idea that Jim and Huck plan on going to the free states and live together. I guess I am confused. Plus, why did they travel at night and not during the day? It is not like anyone who would see them in the day would even know them anyways. Plus, the prank that Huck played on Jim, the one where he they got separated because of the fog and Huck tried convincing Jim that he has been on the raft all night. I know it isn't a huge factor in the book, but I don't get why Jim made a huge deal out of it? He makes Huck feel so ashamed of himself for telling a little lie and try to make Jim think he was. I just do not understand what the big deal was and why Huck even thought that was funny in the first place. The more I read I got the idea that it was a personal problem but still.
Page 87 the quote where it starts off as "It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself....." This paragraph or quote is showing that Huck is actually starting to care about a black persons feelings. Usually people did not care about all the harsh things they said to the blacks or would even do. Huck is realizing they are like everyone else and they also have feelings just like everyone else. It was tough being a black man back in those times and I like reading and seeing that a young individual, like Huck, is learning that the color of your skin should not define you as a person. I am glad that he changes his perspective and takes the time to actually be humble to Jim and apologize for his doing.
Page 89 two men in a skiff come along and stopped to ask Huck if there are any one on his raft and asking Huck if Jim is white or black because they said there are five blacks that ran off up the yonder. Huck felt bad by saying Jim was white, but he was afraid to get in trouble for being around and hanging out with a black men. I personally think it was a good choice for Huck to say Jim was white because who knows what would of happened. Some may think differently but you have to think about what was the right thing to do in that situation. Think about it, If Huck would of send he was a black man then Jim probably would of been punished and sent away and Huck would of probably get sent back home. He was actually trying to protect them and especially Jim. I feel like Huck is starting to care a lot about Jim and their friendship.
